My initial foray into the electric aviation industry began at Wisk, an EVTOL pioneer. By the time I left in 2020, I had become the principal path planner for their autonomous aircraft. While 1% of my effort went into designing the primary flight plan, the remaining 99% was dedicated to anticipating and planning for contingencies. There's an endless array of potential issues that can arise during flight. This experience taught me invaluable lessons in human factors and the complexities of crafting simple solutions for intricate problems. It was here that I began to truly understand the importance of simplifying both hardware and software, distilling them to their most essential forms.
Later, I joined Pyka, drawn by their mission to solve a clear problem where electric aviation was the obvious solution—crop dusting. Pyka is revolutionizing this hazardous task by removing the human element and reducing operational costs. The aircraft's range limitations are a non-issue, as it needs to reload fungicide every 20 minutes anyway. Fun fact, organic crops often require more crop dusting than conventional ones, making this technology even more valuable. At Pyka, I witnessed the perfect blend of simplification and technical mastery. With only modifications to the fuselage and battery, they transformed a fixed-wing, all-electric agricultural spray drone into a 400 km range cargo drone. While range isn't the only factor, this achievement convinced me that the future of electric aviation lies in ECTOL (Electric Conventional Takeoff and Landing) rather than EVTOL.
While I loved my time at Pyka, I felt a compelling drive to advance electric aviation even further by developing the technology that will make it possible. My primary focus now is on creating the most power-dense and reliable motor specifically designed for aviation and furthering the Raspanion project.
