8Phase is on a mission to create the technology that will power the short-haul aviation of the future. Our ultimate goal is to build the most advanced motors and supporting technologies for this new era of electric flight. Our first step—and our first product—is a 30 kW levitated ducted fan with a 100 mm inner diameter. This innovative rim-driven motor operates without bearings, representing a significant leap forward in motor design.
Yes. All three require large power-dense electric motors which is the first product 8Phase intends to deliver.
The 8Phase motor is powered by eight different coil groups that are independently controlled and generally slightly out of phase with one another in order to impart the right combination of forces and torques on the levitating rotor such that it stays in the middle of it's levitation volume. Below is a few milliseconds of early test data showing each coil group's command.
The first prototype motor has successfully generated thrust while maintaining stable levitation. This achievement was the key milestone I set to trigger bringing the business out of stealth mode.
